Advice to a new Au Pair

Welcome to England and your new life as an Au Pair in your Host Family! We hope you will be happy.

Please don't forget that things will be very different for you in another country, and it may take a little time to settle into this new life.

Remember that you came to England to experience a different lifestyle and Culture so don't be upset if things do seem strange!

If you find it confusing to constantly hear a foreign language, remember your English may not be very good now, but it will get better, and in time you will understand more and more of what is being said around you.

Please remember that while you are adjusting to life here, although it may be a little difficult for you to do this, you must do two things - the first is to smile, and the second is to TRY to speak English. I promise you that to speak bad English is better than to speak no English at all, and no Family will want a miserable, silent Au Pair in their home!! The more that you try, the more that the Family will be glad to have you.

Your Family should make you comfortable and welcome in their Home, and we hope that you are made to feel like another Son/Daughter, and not a domestic servant. However, please remember that the Family needs some privacy in their own Home, especially in the evenings, after work.

You too may welcome the chance of relaxing in your own room, perhaps with a friend, if your Host Family gives you permission.

Have respect for your Host Family's Home. Keep yourself and your Bedroom tidy and clean, and remember, that even if you have finished your work for the day, or you are having a day off, if you see something in front of you that needs doing,do it!! You live in the family home too, and you should help to look after it.
